Product DescriptionA quintessential example of George Winston's "folk piano" style, December speaks to the spirit of the season. Mixing traditional carols, a couple of classical works, and his own originals, Winston drops notes with icy clarity into a winter silence, rippling through "Carol of Bells" and coaxing dark, introspective moods from his own suite, "Night." The pianist's liner notes are also a trip as he cites the numerous sources for his music. Who would've thought that the gentle melodies of "Peace" were inspired by the soundtrack to TV's The Outer Limits? This 20th anniversary edition, which includes two bonus tracks, is a vast sonic improvement over previous releases. --John DilibertoProduct FeaturesCustomer ReviewsRated I had heard one of George Winston's songs online, and after that I knew I had to buy this cd. I love every song on here, and love each rendition of the Christmas songs. I had a December/Christmas wedding and I had this cd played during the seating of the guests. Everyone loved it and I got many compliments on it. If you love piano music, and especially Christmas music, then this is the cd for you! Rated I got a chuckle when I learned that George Winston's oeuvre includes homages to artists as diverse as Vince Guaraldi and the Doors. For those of us who also have quirky and small-c catholic tastes, there's something liberating about knowing that an artist that critics might love to pigeonhold (as "New Age," in George's case) is much more musically open and open-ended than nay-sayers would have you believe. I say, do what you love, Georgie boy, and more power to ya. I know there are those for whom the words "Windham Hill" induce a spate of gagging. I'm so glad I don't worry about such things anymore (if I ever did really). George Winston is a talented pianist whose arrangements are strikingly inventive. Like so much of the early Windham Hill releases, this one is meditative, for the most part, and not overtly EDGY (which may explain why the hipper-than-thou set might disdain it). But it's just right for the season, and may be just right for just about ANY season (it's February and I'm still playing it). Winston's bell like tones can be as ethereal and as haunting as Philip Glass at his most accessible. There are moments here that remind me of Glass's soundtrack for THE HOURS (though not quite as repetitive), so maybe you could say there's some bite in all this winter chill after all. Rated Love this CD. Although there are seasonal songs on this CD, I still listen to it year round. Some of them do not sound seasonal, so it works. It's a beautiful album. Rated When you are celebrating Christmas with your friends and family plug in this music to let the true spirit of Christmas set the tone for a beautiful evening. This is one of my wife's favorite. We bought several to give as gifts. Rated Just as good as it was 20 years ago, I have listened to this album again and again starting when I was 15 and now with my son as he works some of it out on the piano. It's deeply moving to me, beautiful, comtemplative renditions of Christmas music known to all, making them brand new still. Similar Products
